The Passion of the Christ

Would you let your kids watch this?

And if so,

What age would you allow that?

I am thinking of letting my 11 and possibly my 8 1/2 year old

watch this.

It is much more true to what actually happened than

Jesus of Nazareth.

*sorry for the 3 separate posts....lost of loose thoughts out there today

  1. Have contemplated letting my 13 (almost 14) yo son watch, but my 10yo dd is too tender hearted. She has a hard time with books that are upsetting, so this wouldn't be for her right now. Honestly, I haven't watched it again. It's still very vivid in my memory; I know you and others re-watch every year - I just haven't been up to doing that. However, if my oldest watches, I would again this year. Need to talk with hubby about it...

  2. The Gospel of John is a much more beautiful, and not nearly as violent, portrayal of the Passion. The language is so beautiful. Frankly, the scenes with satan in The Passion scared me beyond belief and I'm an adult. My kids did not watch it until the were at least 14.

  3. I might let my almost 14 year old watch it, but wouldn't let the younger boys view for now. Even as an adult, the movie is incredibly moving and a bit much at times. Sometimes the boys have watched something rated for an older child and it has been more upsetting than I thought it would. I guess I am starting to err more on the side of caution and not let them watch things early. For some reason, reading from a book is easier to handle upsetting situations than seeing it acted out for you.

  4. I own it Jamie and have only watched it once. To watch it and honestly think about what is happening can be quite an emotion. Personally I think you should let him look at it but I sit here looking at the adorable faces of your girls and would recommend holding off a while for them.

  5. Don't hate me, but I've never seen it. And I don't want to. Just thinking about what He went through for us brings me to tears. I don't need to see it on the screen. For now, it's not an issue within our family.

  6. Hi Jamie Jo, I did let my 10 year old watch some of it last year during Lent and it was tough. He left the room several times (during the scouraging) because it was too much for him to take in. And the tempting/taunting scenes with Satan were very scary. He left the room for that too. It was very violent and heart wrenching for me and I'm an adult. He was too young for such a strong and emotional film.

  7. We have the book on the movie, which the kids have looked through. They can look at the vivid pictures and get the idea, minus the really graphic and realistic scenes (that are too much for Luke and Noelle 11 and 10) to watch yet. They will watch it as they get older.

We then watch Jesus of Naz starting on Palm Sunday, and they are SO excited to "see" what happens all week! I know this is a sanitized version, but the book on The Passion shows them what He REALLY looked like on His Via Dolorosa!

  8. Hmmm. It came out in 2004 so it was on dvd about a year later? I reckon my youngest was 7 or 8 when we all watched it together. I burst into tears the minute that guy spit on Jesus and kept on until the end. Our kids were moved to tears but also a deeper understanding and compassion for Our Lords Passion - what He did for them is forever etched into their memories. They've never had nightmares about it, because they know He is Risen, He is Risen indeed!

However, you know your kids better than anyone (you and your husband need to decide this). ;)
